Communication Technology

In my opinion, technology is helping communications barriers in health care. I believe this because it will deliver better care for the patients and nurses. By using technology, healthcare professionals can obtain faster and easier access to patient’s information regarding medical records, history, and lab results. Also, using technology will help healthcare professionals explain procedures or treatments to patients who speak a different language. A great example of this would be personal digital assistants (PDA’s). PDA’s have language translators that help the nurse communicate with the patient and/or patient’s family who speak a different language. In addition, they can transfer documents wirelessly to the hospital, calculate drug dosages, analyze lab results, and schedule appointments. Communication technology such as PDA’s will minimize communication errors greatly.

When I Grow Up

After I graduate from UOIT, I would like to receive my master’s degree at Ryerson University, and become an adult nurse practitioner. This is because in most provinces in Canada, legislated NP’s (nurse practitioners) have more responsibilities and duties and are able to diagnose many disorders, prescribe medications, order diagnosis, and refer patients to specialists (Alden-Bugden, 2008). As well, I would like to take care of patients who are in the intensive care unit and are experiencing life threatening diseases. This is because I love taking care of people when they are feeling sick and patients in the ICU need the most and complex care. Lastly, I love new challenges and someday I hope to change someone’s life.

Balancing School and Friends

Marlow, C. (2006). Assignments, [Image]. Retrieved November 23, 2008 from Looking back from MLS experince http://diaboliquecm.com/assignments.html.

In high school they warned us that college/university was going to be really tough. However, it did not hit me until a month into the semester. I had required readings in every class, assignments were due, and mid terms were in a week, plus I hadn't seen my friends and boyfriend in a while or gone to the gym in a really long time. Immediately, I started to feel a little stressed out, I talked to my friends and my boyfriend about it and they really helped through October and November. One thing that I learned from this experience was managing my time and balancing school work and friends, also not leaving assignments to the last minute. From this experience, I feel a lot more confident in handing in my papers. In addition, I believe I am more relaxed and stress free.

Why Nursing?

Ever since I was a little girl I always had an interest in medicine, but it was not until grade 12 that I decided to become a nurse. The main reason why I want to pursue a career in nursing is because I will able to take care of many people in need. Nursing is not just doing your duties and responsibilities, but it is about listening to your patient’s needs and concerns and trying to make them feel better. I think I will make a good nurse because I am an excellent listener and very open minded. To me, nursing is not a hobby or a profession, it is my passion. I enjoy helping people when they are struggling with something, because in the end I will get to watch them learn and grow.
